We run regular field trips most months of the year and all birders, members or not, are welcome to come along and join us. Trips are led by experienced local birders who will help you to get the most from your outing and beginners will get an especially warm welcome. Occasional summer field trips are informally planned. Check this page for up to date and last minute information about trips (change of venue or time, cancellation etc).
Most of the trips are on Saturday mornings starting at 8am unless specified otherwise. Bring appropriate clothing and binoculars - scopes are usually available somewhere amongst the group. 8:00 AM Meet in the parking lot in front of Zeller's on Taschereau Blvd., west of the Champlain Bridge. From Montreal, take the Champlain Bridge to Exit 8 (Taschereau Blvd.). Turn right on Taschereau Blvd. Zeller's will be immediately on your right. There will be lots of driving (weather permitting), and little walking. Car-pooling is recommended. Half day.
8 h 00 Rassemblement dans le stationnement du magasin Zellers, sur le boul. Taschereau, à l'ouest du pont Champlain. De Montréal, prendre le pont Champlain et continuer jusqu'à la sortie 8 (boul. Taschereau). Tourner à droite sur le boul. Taschereau. Le magasin Zellers se trouve immédiatement à droite. La sortie implique beaucoup de déplacements en voiture, en supposant la température favorable, mais peu de marche. Nous recommandons le covoiturage. Demi-journée.

8:00 AM From Montreal take Hwy 40 to the Ontario border (40 km from Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue). Continue on Hwy 417 and take Exit 9 (9 km) for Hawkesbury. Continue on Hwy 17 approximately 7 km and take the Tupper St. exit on your right (signed for Province de/of Quebec). At 1.8 km, at the T junction, turn left on Main Street. After another 1.8 km, turn right onto John St. (opposite the big church). Continue on John St. across Long Sault Bridge over the Ottawa River. At the first traffic light in Grenville, QC, turn right on Rue Principale and make an immediate right into the SAQ parking lot where we will meet. The distance is approximately 52 km from the Île-aux-Tourtes Bridge at the west end of Montreal Island on Hwy 40. We will explore the area around Grenville. It will be a driving trip, and some of the roads will not be paved. The leaders will have scouted the area in the days before. Looking for winter finches, bald eagles and other raptors and waterfowl. Half day.
8 h 00 À partir de Montréal, prendre l’autoroute 40 et poursuivre jusqu’à la frontière ontarienne (40 km à partir de Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue). Continuer sur l’autoroute 417 sur une distance d’environ 9 km et prendre la sortie 9 pour Hawkesbury. Continuer sur la route 17 sur une distance d’environ 7 km et prendre la sortie pour rue Tupper, à votre droite (indiquant Province de Québec). Après 1,8 km, au carrefour en T, tourner à gauche sur Main Street. Après encore 1,8 km, tourner à droite sur la rue John (en face de l’église). Continuer sur la rue John et traverser le pont Long Sault qui passe au-dessus de la rivière des Outaouais. Au premier feu de circulation de Grenville, PQ, tourner à droite sur la rue Principale puis tourner immédiatement à droite au stationnement de la SAQ où a lieu le rassemblement. La distance totale à partir du pont Île-aux-Tourtes, situé à l’extrémité ouest de l’île de Montréal, est d’environ 52 km. On explorera les alentours de Grenville. Les déplacements auront lieu en auto sur des routes dont certaines ne sont pas asphaltées. Les responsables de l’excursion auront exploré les lieux durant les jours précédant l’excursion.À la recherche de fringillidés, de rapaces tels le Pygargue à tête blanche et de sauvagine. Demi-journée.

8:00 AM From the Mercier Bridge take Rte 132 to Sainte-Catherine. Turn left onto rue Centrale, which becomes Blvd Marie-Victorin at the end of the street. Continue to the first stop sign and turn left to cross the bridge. Turn left after crossing the lift bridge for the locks and continue to where the road forks. Turn right and go down the hill to the parking lot. Looking for ducks and winter gulls. Possibility of visiting other areas, if time permits. Half day.
8h00 À partir du pont Mercier, prendre la route 132 en direction de Sainte-Catherine. Tourner à gauche sur la rue Centrale. Continuer jusqu'au bout de cette rue qui devient le boul. Marie-Victorin. Continuer sur celui-ci jusqu'au premier arrêt puis tourner à gauche pour traverser le pont. Tourner ensuite à gauche après le pont levis et continuer jusqu'à la jonction. Tourner à droite et descendre la colline jusqu'au stationnement. À la recherche de canards et de goélands hivernants. Si le temps le permet, d'autres sites pourraient être visités. Demi-journée.

SPECIAL TRIP/EXCURSION SPéCIALE: AMHERST ISLAND, ON

11:45 AM Meet at the dock in Stella, the only settlement on the island. As stated, the meeting time is 11:45 a.m. (i.e. arrival of the 11:30 am ferry from Millhaven), and is approximately 3-4 hours driving time from Montreal. The group will check back at the dock at 12:45 pm for any late arrivals. Accommodation is available in Kingston for those preferring to stay over. Amherst Island is an area with a great reputation for late winter birding. Looking for owls, finches, waterfowl and early migrants. This will be a combination driving/walking trip. Bring your own food and dress warmly. The trip will end at dusk after looking for Short-eared Owls. The ferry back to the mainland leaves every hour on the hour; the crossing takes about a quarter of an hour. Please note that access to the Owl Woods may be restricted if there has been a lot of snow. In that case, people should be prepared to hike a mile or so. If there is little snow, access to the woods by car is possible. Amherst Island is 16 km west of Kingston. Exit 593 from Hwy 401. Proceed south to Millhaven. Turn right at the T-junction in Millhaven. The ferry dock is 200 m west on Hwy 33 (Bath Road). Round trip costs $8.00 per vehicle. The ferry leaves Millhaven every hour. Carpooling recommended before proceeding to island. If you are interested in carpooling, please contact the leader before March 1, and he will try to put you in contact with other participants.
11 h 45 Rassemblement au quai de Stella, seul établissement de l'île, à 11h45 (arrivée du traversier à 11h30, à partir de Millhaven). Prévoir 3 à 4 heures de route à partir de Montréal. Le groupe vérifiera de nouveau vers 12 h 45 s'il y a des arrivées tardives. L'hébergement à Kingston est possible pour ceux qui préfèrent ne pas revenir à Montréal la même journée. Amherst Island jouit d'une grande réputation pour l'observation d'oiseaux à la fin de la saison hivernale. Espèces recherchées: hiboux, fringilidés, oiseaux aquatiques et migrateurs hâtifs. On combinera la marche et la conduite automobile. Apporter lunch et vêtements chauds. L'excursion se terminera au crépuscule après avoir recherché des hiboux des marais. Le traversier retournant au lieu de départ part à chaque heure (à l'heure exacte). La traversée dure environ 15 minutes. L'accès à Owl Woods peut être restreint s'il y a beaucoup de neige au sol. Dans ce cas, il faut envisager de marcher environ 1.7 km. S'il y a peu de neige, l'accès à cet endroit en voiture est possible. Amherst Island est situé à 16 km à l'ouest de Kingston. Sortie 593 de l'autoroute 401. Prendre la direction sud vers Millhaven. À l'intersection en T, dans Millhaven, tourner à droite. Le quai du traversier est situé à 200 m à l'ouest de la route 33 (Bath Road). Le coût est de 8,00$ par véhicule. Départ du traversier à chaque heure. Pour le covoiturage, contacter le responsable avant le 1er mars; il tentera de vous mettre en contact avec d'autres participants.

8:00 AM Meet in the parking lot at Parc des Rapides, corner of LaSalle Blvd and 6th Avenue in Ville LaSalle (just east of Bishop Power Blvd). Take Hwy 20 to the Blvd de la Vérendrye exit. Heading west de la Vérendrye, turn left onto the Stephens Street Bridge that crosses the Aqueduct. Follow this street south to the waterfront on LaSalle Blvd. Turn right on LaSalle Blvd and follow it to the parking lot at corner of 6th Avenue. Looking for waterfowl and early migrants. If there is enough time left, we will visit the riverfront at Nuns Island. Be prepared to drive. Half day.
8 h 00 Rassemblement dans le stationnement du Parc des Rapides. Celui-ci est situé à l'intersection boul. LaSalle et de la 6e avenue à ville LaSalle (juste à l'est du boul. Bishop-Power). Prendre l'autoroute 20 et prendre la sortie du boul. de la Vérendrye. Aller en direction ouest sur ce boul. À la rue Stephens, prendre le pont qui traverse le canal de l'Aqueduc. Continuer sur la rue Stephens jusqu'au boul. LaSalle, qui longe le fleuve. Tourner à droite sur ce boul. et continuer jusqu'à stationnement, situé au coin de 6e avenue. Espèces recherchées : sauvagine et migrateurs hâtifs. S’il reste suffisamment de temps, nous visiterons la rive du côté sud de l'île-des-Soeurs. Il faudra s'attendre à conduire. Demi-journée.
